Griffonia 5-HTP and ADHD: uses, benefits & experiences

“Is 5 HTP good for ADHD?”, is what many people wonder. The usual treatment for ADHD or ADD involves medication, but there are also natural ways to treat ADHD or ADD, such as treatment with supplements. One of the supplements that is gaining in popularity is 5-HTP, from the Griffonia plant. In this article, you will find more information about 5-HTP as a supplement to treat symptoms of ADD and ADHD. 5 HTP is also used for sleeping problems, depression, anxiety, migraines and tension headaches, fibromyalgia, binge eating disorder (BED), ataxia, Down syndrome, Ramsey-Hunt syndrome and as an adjunctive therapy in Parkinson's disease.

Natural Treatment of ADHD and ADD with Griffonia (5-HTP)

Some children and adults with ADHD experience side effects from regular ADHD medication. Others are hesitant to use ADHD medication due to other reasons. Therefore, more and more people are therefore looking for a natural treatment for ADHD, for themselves or for their child(ren). The aim of these natural treatments is often to better regulate neurotransmitters such as Serotonin and Dopamine. One of the well known natural substances that can help with this, is Griffonia extract, also called 5-HTP.

What is 5-HTP (Griffonia)?

The natural supplement 5-HTP is extracted from the seeds of the African Griffonia Simplicifolia plant. Griffonia Simplicifolia is naturally rich in 5-HTP. 5-HTP is also a substance that is produced naturally by the body, from the amino acid Tryptophan. Tryptophan can be obtained through our diet, for example by eating eggs, cheese, turkey, nuts and seeds. Tryptophan is thus converted into 5-HTP, which is then converted into serotonin.

So we can increase 5-HTP by eating:

  • eggs
  • cheese
  • turkey
  • nuts
  • seeds

Common uses of 5-HTP

5-HTP is used in treating depression, bipolar disorder, stress, anxiety, panic attacks, aggression, teeth grinding, OCD, addiction withdrawal, PMS, insomnia, nightmares, eating disorders, overweight/obesity, fibromyalgia, chronic headache, migraine, chronic pain, jet lag, and obstructive sleep apnea (Ortho Kennis). More and more people with ADD and ADHD experience the benefits of 5-HTP

What does 5-HTP do for children and adults with AD(H)D?

Some research has been done about 5-HTP, and what is clear is that 5-HTP naturally increases serotonin levels. It stimulates serotonin receptors to properly produce and metabolize serotonin. The increase in serotonin may reduce symptoms associated with ADHD, such as sleeping problems, insomnia and anxiety (Oxford Vitality).

5 HTP also helps with depression, anxiety, migraines and tension headaches, fibromyalgia, binge eating disorder (BED), ataxia, Down syndrome, Ramsey-Hunt syndrome and as adjunctive therapy in Parkinson's disease.

5-HTP in the absence of amino acid tryptophan

When there is a deficiency of the essential amino acid tryptophan in the body (the precursor of 5-HTP), symptoms may occur, such as insomnia, depression, hallucinations, mood swings, nervousness, abnormal appetite, hair loss, skin abnormalities, diarrhea, impaired vision, ataxia and polyneuropathy.

5-HTP dosage

There is no specific 5-HTP dosage for ADHD, but a recognized safe dosage for 5-HTP is between 50mg and 200mg, depending on your needs.

Experiences with 5-HTP griffonia

In various Facebook groups for people with ADHD, including the Dutch Wandering Minds Community, I see questions about Griffonia, or 5-HTP. People are looking for experiences that others have with griffonia.

The experiences below with 5 HTP are freely translated from Healthy Place

About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD. I am 33 years old.

However, I was very surprised not to see 5-HTP (tryptophan) or DL-phenylalanine on the list. These are two of what I call catalysts of my natural remedy pills that I take every day. I'll know in a day or two when I'm not taking those two. Especially 5-HTP was fantastic ! I take about 100mg. every night before going to sleep. It helps me sleep very well and I wake up very refreshed .

A different experience with 5-HTP

One of the main manifestations of my ADHD is paranoia. I am fully convinced that no one likes me and that if there is a debate I will accept that everyone will think I am wrong. This can make me very defensive and I sometimes seem more aggressive than I intend to. It was an amazing feeling after taking 100mg of 5-HTP the first time! that I literally felt this feeling disappear in my head! I know I'm talking crazy, but that's exactly how it felt. My problem at the moment is that I am not involved in a project that had reached enormous proportions. Suddenly this was no problem! I certainly slept better . I've stopped craving carbs and the world just seems like a calmer place. Since I've only been using it for a week, I'm hesitant to tell everyone to buy it, but I'll keep you posted on how it goes. You are not supposed to take it with antidepressants of any kind so if anyone is taking these you should talk to their GP

More experiences with 5-HTP

I have done a lot of research on natural remedies. My son is a gifted child with ADHD, 9 years old.

From 1st to 3rd grade, he cried whenever he got into trouble, things weren't fair and he got frustrated easily. He cried throughout football practice. Once I put him on this (10mg at breakfast and at bedtime), he was a completely different person – a normal kid. He can deal with the daily frustrations, children teasing him, problems at school or elsewhere . Better yet, he had a positive outlook , seemed to enjoy things more , had a much better sense of humor and continues to improve social skillswhich have been completely absent in recent years. He spent the break alone or read, and sat alone in the lunchroom. Now he hangs out with the other guys. Also sleeps much better.
